Samsung has lost a patent dispute against Apple in the UK's High Court afterit ruled that the patents concerned were not valid.Although the judge agreed that the standards-essential patents were infringedby Apple, that the patents themselves were invalid gave Apple the victory.Samsung had been seeking royalties worth 2.4 percent on sales of Apple'siPhones.The judge, Mr Justice Floyd ruled that all three patents were invalid becausethey were the same as earlier patents or described technology that he said wastoo "obvious" to enjoy legal protection.Samsung said it is reviewing the judgment before deciding on whether toappeal.

The European Commission is seeking the backing of European governments topush ahead with an investigation into allegations against China's Huawei and ZTE.Normally, the Commission requires a formal complaint from affectedmanufacturers, but the European Union's trade chief can seek political supportfrom member states instead.Citing EU diplomats, the Reuters news agency said that the EU's Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht supports taking a toughstance on claims that the Chinese government offers implicit support for itslocal companies when they compete overseas.However, there has been concerns expressed by someEuropean government representatives that sanctions against the two Chinese firmscould harm European companies seeking orders in the Chinese mainland.The Trade Commissionerhas also struggled to secure support from the European vendors who areunderstood to share the same concerns about being locked out of the lucrativeChinese market.Both Huawei and ZTE have denied receiving statesupport, although it has been noted that funding from state-owned banks isunusually generous for companies of their size.On the web: Reuters
